What is Karate?

The word Karate is derived from two Japanese characters. "Kara" which means empty and "te" which means hand.
Together they form the word Karate. This refers to the fact that a person who has trained in Karate needs no weapon - rather they have trained their body into a useful tool for self defense.

Shotokan Karate is a traditional martial art that teaches self esteem, self discipline, self confidence and self defense. We offer training methods that have been developed over centuries, designed specifically to improve concentration and balance, strengthen muscles, increase flexibility, and
stimulate the cardiovascular system in a safe manner. By learning how to move from your 'center', you will notice an improvement in coordination, breathing, and an improved sense of well-being.

Shotokan is a non-contact form of Karate, offering you all the benefits of the martial art without injury. Participants are coached on how to properly kick and strike a bag, developing strong techniques which promote self confidence and reduce stress.
We learn to control our power and use it only when appropriate fer self-defense.
Great emphasis is placed on Kata, the formal exercises that on individual can practice on their own.

Shotokan Karate is ideal for those who are looking for an activity that allows the individual person to develop skills at their own pace in a non-competitive atmosphere.
Regardless of age or physical condition, everyone can benefit from learning
Shotokan Karate.
